Last month we offered a contest to win a fabulous Beaufort getaway, celebrating our friends and followers on social media. We are looking forward to welcoming our winning guests to the area and treating them to a stay at The Cuthbert House Inn.
Whether you are local or you are looking for an out of town getaway, downtown Beaufort, South Carolina is a perfect place to retreat and spend a few days.
Beaufort is nestled perfectly in the Lowcountry. Located an hour from Savannah and Charleston, four hours east of Atlanta, and less than an hour northwest of Hilton Head. It’s an easy drive for a short “staycation” or to add to your tour of the Southeast.
Almost everything in our downtown is within walking distance from our historic bed and breakfast. Read on for a two-day itinerary for visiting. We’ll share what we recommend doing, seeing, eating and drinking on a quick trip to Beaufort, SC.
Eat an award-winning breakfast at the Cuthbert House Inn
Named the Lowcountry’s Best Bed and Breakfast in 2022, our guests consistently rave about our seasonal homemade breakfast menus.
Take a stroll down Bay Street
We love a good walk down historic Bay Street. You’ll find plenty of shops, restaurants, and hidden treasures! We love popping in to LuLu Burgess gift shop to browse before grabbing a sweet treat at YoYos ice cream. While there are plenty of good shops to browse on the iconic main street, be sure to veer off Bay Street so you don’t miss the locally-owned shops hidden along the side streets. Bathe, Nevermore Books, Coastal Art Supply, and Good Aura are hidden treasures along West and Scott Streets. If you head toward the water on the West Street Extension, you will find Lowcountry Cider Company for coffee and treats as well as The Tabby Shore and The Beaufort Candy Shoppe.
Enjoy the Coastal Waterways
Lands End Paddling gives both kayak and SUP instruction while making sure your experience is safe and fun! Whether you’re a beginning paddler or someone with experience, it’s their goal to help you create memories on the Beaufort waterways.
Take a Carriage Tour
Enjoy a ride with one of our favorite carriage companies. We work with both Southurn Rose Carriage Company and Sea Island Carriage tours! Leave from the Marina parking lot on Bay Street, and don a pair of headphones so you can hear your guide delight you with with facts and anecdotes about the charming historical Old Point neighborhood. Guests love the relaxed pace and learning about the history of Beaufort and the surrounding area. Don’t forget to ask your tour guide about the long list of blockbuster movies filmed in the area!
Grab dinner at Saltus
Enjoy an incredible meal and our gorgeous Lowcountry fall weather when you dine outside on the Sonoma-style patio at Saltus River Grill. Locally owned and operated right in the heart of historic Downtown Beaufort, Saltus is an urban seafood grille known for the area’s freshest sushi, mind-blowing steaks and seafood. Order an after dinner drink and see if you can spot any dolphins in the river.
Browse local art and antiques
Art and antique collectors will find a great assortment of shops and galleries within walking distance of Cuthbert House Inn. Bay Street Treasures, Beaufort Art Association, Duffy’s , and Rhett Gallery, and Thibault Gallery are all conveniently located in historic downtown.
Brunch at Lowcountry Produce
You do not want to miss this local dining experience. Located off of Bay Street, Lowcountry Produce is known for its airy, photo-ready aesthetic and locally sourced, homemade breakfast and lunch menu. Don’t forget to pick up some goodies to take home.
Enjoy the swings in Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park
Part of the appeal of our picturesque town is the opportunity to slow down and just enjoy the view. Take a moment, or an hour, to sit and relax while taking in the beauty of the Beaufort River.
If you’re planning to stay out after sunset, downtown Beaufort has a few local nightlife options. Luther’s and Old Bull Tavern are favorites of both residents and visitors.
Hunting Island State Park.
There is more than enough to see and do in downtown Beaufort alone, but if you want to see more of the beauty of the Lowcountry we highly recommend a drive to Hunting Island. Enjoy the thousands of acres of marsh and maritime forest, beaches, a saltwater lagoon, and the only lighthouse in the state of South Carolina that you can climb to the top of! We recommend booking a trip with St Phillips Island Ferry for an incredible day trip.
