Step Outside! Five Spring Activities in Beaufort, SC

Hello Spring! It’s the perfect time to visit Beaufort and enjoy this lovely weather. If you’re itching to get outside and enjoy the sunshine, these local favorites are a great place to start. Whether you are seeking adventure or respite, there is something for everyone in Beaufort, SC. Here are five spring activities to check out during your visit. Grab your hat and step outside with us!

Take a Hike

Are you curious about the local wildlife or hoping to get active outdoors? Beaufort has several wildlife preserves and nature trails to explore. Our favorite is The Cypress Wetlands Trail

You can also check out the new Crystal Lake Park on Lady’s Island, a 25-acre forested park that leads to a salt marsh boardwalk. Another local staple is the award winning Spanish Moss Trail, a great option for both walking and cycling. The trail boasts a 10-mile green trail way that is sure to awe anyone that steps down its path. The trail winds its way under the mossy covered treetops of Beaufort, past historically significant sites and buildings, and even offers its users remarkable views of the marshy waterfront.

Get in the Water

The Beaufort River Blueway is a perfect spot for seasoned kayakers or kayaking novices alike. This scenic paddling trail follows the Beaufort River, connecting the two historic cities of Beaufort and Port Royal, SC. Bring your binoculars and sense of adventure! There is so much to see along the way. Paddlers enjoy exploring the historic ruins of Fort Frederick, which can only be accessed by water. You can also expect close encounters with wildlife such as an assortment of birds, terrapins, river otters, minks,  and bottle-nose dolphins.

Don’t have your own kayak? You can take a tour with Beaufort Kayak Tours. They offer historical, ecological, and sight-seeing tours through the downtown waterways, creeks, and marshes.

Check out the Farmer’s Market

The Port Royal Farmer’s Market is a great place to glimpse into local culture and history, taste locally grown produce, and meet the people who grew it! You will find fresh, local, seasonal produce, seafood, meat, eggs, bread, cheese, plants and beautiful, fresh cut flower bouquets. The market is open every Saturday from 9 to 12. Check out their website for weekly events and exhibits.

Pick Your Own

Interested in adding some novelty to your produce shopping? Check out one of the area’s “U-pick” farms and return home with fresh Beaufort fruits and veggies. Enjoy wandering the fields and sampling the tasty selections fresh from the tree, bush, vine, or ground! This year at Dempsey Farms, a local favorite, strawberry season opens April 4, followed by squash and zucchini in May. Check out their website for a complete list of fruits and veggies and availability dates.
