You’ve found your soulmate and the perfect ring, now you just need to find the perfect spot to pop the question. Luckily for you, South Carolina’s Lowcountry has plenty of options for every couple. From classic dinners to romantic beach sunsets and everything in between.
On a Carriage Tour
You’ll see darling horse-drawn carriages roaming through town and a trip to Beaufort isn’t complete without a ride. Beaufort has two premier carriage tour companies. Southern Rose Buggy Tours and Sea Island Carriage Company stand apart due to their carriage colors but are both excellent options. You can even hire a private carriage for just the two of you. Talk about a photo op! A ride on one of these carriages already feels like a special surprise, but popping the question would make for a great story you’ll want to tell over and over again.
The Cypress Wetlands Trail
The Cypress Wetlands Trail is another nice place for a quiet walk in next-door Port Royal. Take a leisurely stroll and pop the question when the time feels right. Afterward, start your evening of celebration with a dinner reservation at one of Port Royal’s most romantic restaurants.
Hunting Island State Park
If you’re looking for that iconic beach proposal, Hunting Island State Park is the place to go. Five miles of sandy beaches, a historic lighthouse, marshy and maritime forests, and numerous piers are just the start. Simply stroll along the beach and pop the question with the sounds of waves crashing in the background or find somewhere secluded to have all to yourselves. The Marsh Boardwalk is a local secret and you’ll likely be the only ones on the trail even at sunset. The boardwalk leads to a quiet hummock (pronounced hammock by locals) that’s a piece of small island information.
Jarvis Creek Park
One of the more understated attractions on Hilton Head Island, Jarvis Creek Park is a quiet spot with an abundance of nature. A short trail circles a pond with a picturesque boardwalk jutting out over the water. There are also numerous old-growth trees that would be the perfect backdrop for your proposal. Hire a photographer to follow you around the park and capture your picturesque proposal.
Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park
A swing bench in the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park could also offer a beautiful backdrop for a spur of the moment proposal. Bring a little picnic and set out to watch the sunset. Pop the question during golden hour and you’ll have a moment to treasure forever. After the proposal, there are some great restaurants that open onto the park!
St. Phillip’s Island
Coastal Expeditions offers several local tours on the water, including one to remote St. Phillip’s Island. There will be a very limited number of people on this huge barrier island, as the only way to get access is through the state park and this tour company. Visiting the island is such a special experience that your partner won’t suspect a thing. Surprise them with an epic proposal on this beautiful corner of the world.
Cuthbert House Inn Bed & Breakfast
The Cuthbert House Inn is the best place to stay during any trip to Beaufort. This historic antebellum mansion is adorned with romantic extras like whirlpool tubs, fireplaces, bay views, and plush amenities. You can work with innkeepers Ed & Connie to design a romantic surprise. Leave for a day of adventure and sightseeing and return to a room filled with roses, chocolate-covered strawberries, champagne, a two-person cake, and any other combinations you may wish. Or book the “Just the Two of Us” package and present your ring with the gourmet breakfast that you will be served in the privacy of your own suite. The best part is that you can return year after year to the place where it all began.
Hire Susan DeLoach to sneakily follow you around and photograph your stunning proposal. We have used Susan to photograph weddings and are always impressed by the moments she is able to capture.
