Our Favorite Things to Do at Hunting Island Beach
Visit the Lighthouse
Taking a visit to the historic lighthouse is one of the best things you can do at Hunting Island State Park. In fact, this the only publicly accessible lighthouse in South Carolina! It was built in 1859 and has been restored, rebuilt, and relocated several times due to beach erosion. The observation deck is a 167-step climb and will leave you in awe of the beach’s lovely landscape below. However, children are required to be a minimum height of 44” to climb, so be sure to take some measurements before bringing the kids along.
Go Fishing
If you enjoy fishing, you’ll find plenty of spots to cast your line at this popular state park. Wade out into the ocean for some surf fishing, test your luck at Johnson Creek, or attempt a big catch at the nearby lagoon. The Nature Center loans out rods and reels, and you can purchase bait and other gear at the park store! Also, while there is a fishing pier, only a portion of it is open and no fishing is permitted. However, you should still check it out to take in the gorgeous scenery.
Enjoy a Hike
You’ll find many hiking trails throughout Hunting Island State Park that lead you along the coastline and around the marsh. We recommend taking a stroll to “The Boneyard,” a piece of shoreline that’s covered in eroded, white ghost trees. Request to use our complimentary beach chairs if you plan to relax here awhile, and also enjoy a homemade picnic inside of a souvenir Cuthbert House tote!
You’ll also appreciate the Maritime Forest Trail, which takes you deep into the dense Maritime Forest filled with animals like owls, deer, hawks, and more. What’s even better, if you’re vacationing with your furry friend in one of our two pet-friendly rooms, they’re also welcomed at many of these park trails too!
Learn About the Region
Learn about all of the different aspects of the park on a guided tour provided by the Nature Center. View their live reptile exhibits, learn about the impact hurricane Matthew had on Hunting Island State Park and the surrounding area, and discover the beach’s natural resources. In addition to the Nature Center, the park’s visitor center houses a small museum that shares more information about the historic lighthouse.
