What to See on the Cypress Wetlands Trail

If you’re looking for a fun, short outing about ten minutes away from our Inn, look no further than the Cypress Wetlands Trail! It’s a great place to stretch your legs, see some fun wildlife and wetland areas, and enjoy a part of South Carolina that you’ve possibly never seen before. The trail is never crowded, it is less than a mile long, and it’s the perfect way to spend a sunshiny afternoon.

If you’re looking for more fun ideas for your South Carolina getaway, start by accessing our completely free Vacation Guide! It’s an extremely valuable tool to have as you plan your vacation. You’ll find all of our top recommendations on delicious places to eat, unique places to shop, and fun activities to do – like exploring the Cypress Wetlands Trail.

What to Look for on the Cypress Wetlands Trail

The Cypress Wetlands Trail is a loop that takes about 0.8 miles to get from the entrance and back around again. It’s a beautiful wildlife refuge that is the perfect place to spend a little bit of time walking or jogging and just enjoying nature. Here are our favorite things to watch out for as you make your way around the trail.

1. Shoreline Birds

A beautiful, small white heron called the Snowy Egret is one of the birds that makes its home in the Cypress Wetlands! It is absolutely gorgeous and watching it fly is truly spectacular. Occasionally, you can see the nest of the Snowy Egret along with the little chicks. The barred owl can also be seen, watching the onlookers with its wide-eyes. Love looking for birds? Be on the watch for our state bird, the tiny Carolina Wren in the Cypress Wetlands as well!

2. Reptiles

Ready for a challenge? Keep an eye out for the vast reptile species found in the Cypress Wetlands! Home to many different species of turtles, lizards, and snakes, the Wetlands are a fabulous place to see many different reptiles in their native environment. Watch for skinks and non-poisonous snakes, like the king rat and the garter snake. If you’re very fortunate, you might even see an alligator!

3. Incredible Foliage

The real beauty of the Cypress Wetlands is in the incredible trees and foliage that covers the entire trail. Enjoy the coolness of the shade and the refuge from the hot sun. The trees are absolutely stunning and are the perfect backdrop to a relaxing walk after a busy day of sightseeing. We highly recommend turning off the music and phones and just spending the day listening to the sounds of nature along the trail! It’s the best way to recharge while you’re on vacation.
