History
Fort Fremont was built in 1898 during the Spanish-American War to defend the Port Royal Navy Station on Parris Island. It was one of six fortifications designed to protect the southeastern coast. The fort eventually expanded across 170 acres and consisted of large concrete batteries and many buildings including a hospital, mess hall, and bakery.
Although the fort never engaged in combat, it served as a deterrent against seaborne attacks with its state-of-the-art military technology. Today, only the brick hospital remains, and Fort Fremont serves as a snapshot of history.
