St. Helena Chapel of Ease Ruins

St. Helena Chapel of Ease was built circa 1740 and is nestled on St. Helena Island. This quaint chapel provided an excellent place of worship to Southerners until 1861. When the Federal Occupation of St. Helena occurred, it was transformed into a school for freedmen. Then, in 1886, a forest fire burned the chapel, which was never reconstructed. It’s also listed on National Registry of Historic Places. And, if you happen to be there at night, you may just see a ghost or two roaming the grounds!

The Parish Church of St. Helena

The St. Helena Church in Beaufort, SC, features a towering white bell tower overlooking our bayside town, just two blocks from the Cuthbert House Inn on North Street, When you step inside this Anglican church, you’ll find beautiful red carpet lining the aisle and restored hardwood floors underneath the rows of wooden pews. As your eyes look up, you can see the lavish chandelier and gorgeous balcony that wraps around both sides of the interior. When you walk back outside, there is a cemetery with graves dating back to the Civil War and rolling green lawns!

Old Sheldon Church Ruins

In Beaufort County, Old Sheldon Church Ruins is perhaps one of the most important landmarks in our history and is located in Yemassee, SC, just 20 minutes from downtown Beaufort. One of the few churches built in a Greek-temple style, these ruins were named after Sheldon, England, the home of William Bull who was the main beneficiary throughout the 1740s and 1750s. During the Revolutionary War, the church was burned to the ground by British forces and later rebuilt. Yet again, during the Civil War, General Sherman set the church on fire in his “March to the Sea” campaign. Be sure to bring your camera to capture your own perspective of these awe-inspiring ruins.
