The History Behind This Antebellum Home

Circa 1804, the John Mark Verdier House was constructed in the Federal-style and features two staircases that meet at a mezzanine-step and an upstairs balcony. This mansion was named after John Mark Verdier, a prominent merchant and planter in Beaufort. His wealth grew from trading indigo and growing cotton on Port Royal Island on over 1,000 acres of farmland.

What’s on Display?

The John Mark Verdier House showcases the beauty and stunning allure of Beaufort in the 1800s. From intricate designs to illustrious crown molding to original dark hardwood floors, you’ll be captivated by its architectural elements. In addition, there are several collections on display. One of the most iconic exhibits is the “Diorama of 1863 Bay Street.” This scaled model of Beaufort’s National Historic Landmark District, from New to Charles Street, shows 42 original structures (many of which have been lost over time) and provides a closer look at our coastal lifestyle over 150 years ago!

Other exhibits include Robert Smalls (first African American to serve in the U.S. Congress), Civil War Photos by Samuel Cooley, and The Beaufort Volunteer Artillary.
